Cali is salsa! Though the genre wasn’t born here, no city in the world has embraced salsa with as much passion, movement, and joy as Cali. As soon as this tropical rhythm arrived, it fused with the vibrant spirit of the caleños and became an essential part of our cultural identity.

Today, visitors from around the world come to Cali to experience its authentic salsa heartbeat. From street corners to concert halls, the city pulses with music, movement, and sabor—offering an atmosphere like no other.

A City Built Around Salsa

Cali has developed an entire cultural ecosystem around salsa. We’re proud to be home to the largest salsa music archive in the world, and the city has built salsa circuits, clubs, dance schools, and festivals that draw thousands of enthusiasts every year. Salsa tourism—both national and international—has seen a boom, as people arrive eager to experience the rhythm that defines Cali.

Where It All Began

Salsa arrived in Colombia in the mid-20th century, carried by Cuban rhythms that crossed the Caribbean and reached Cali. It was during the 1958 Feria de Cali that the city first showcased its own unique salsa style. But it was in the 1970s that salsa truly took over—transforming Cali into a global salsa capital, where everyone was dancing and every neighborhood echoed with music.

From this explosion of rhythm emerged the baile caleño, a fast, energetic, and flirtatious dance style that set Cali apart. This form of salsa—marked by quick footwork, hip movement, playful turns, and dramatic tricks—broke social and geographic barriers and became a powerful cultural symbol.

Cali’s Signature Salsa Events

Feria de Cali I December 25–30:

A six-day citywide celebration featuring salsa concerts, parades, dance competitions, and the famous Salsódromo—a parade dedicated exclusively to salsa dancers and orchestras.

Festival Petronio Álvarez:

Honoring Afro-Colombian traditions, this festival celebrates the cultural roots that have deeply influenced our music and dance.

La Calle del Sabor:

This open-air space, located right on the street, is truly spectacular for anyone looking to immerse themselves in an authentic salsa experience.

World Salsa Festival:

Launched in 2006, this festival brings together more than 50 salsa dance schools and hundreds of performers from around the globe, showcasing Cali as a true international salsa destination.

From Cali to the World

Cali has given rise to internationally acclaimed salsa bands such as Grupo Niche, Guayacán, and Fruko y sus Tesos. Our dancers, musicians, and teachers have left their mark on stages around the world. With dozens of schools, community programs, and international championships, Cali continues to nurture the next generation of salsa talent.

In 2006, salsa dancing was officially declared a Cultural Heritage of the City—a testament to the profound impact it has had on the identity of our people.
